Abstract
Volatile oil is one component of herbal medicine that have efficacy as antibacterial. Volatile oil of sereh wangi stem and red ginger rhizome have compound potential as antibacterial. This study aims to know antibacterial activity combination of essential oil of sereh wangi stem (Cymbopogon nardus L.) and red ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale var. Rubrum) to Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. This study used diffusion method with sereh wangi stem and red ginger concentrations of 50%, 25%, dan 12,5% on their comparisons of 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 2:1, 3:1. The data was processed by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical with two-ways method. Based on the results test, the combination of volatile oil of sereh wangi stem and red ginger rhizome had antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. The result of their antibacterial activity on comparison of combination essential oil 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 2:1, 3:1 at concentration 50% respectively their diameter were 19,05 ± 0,65; 26,75 ± 0,79; 23,05 ± 1,59 ; 20,60 ± 0,80; 18,70 ± 0,72. Based on the result, they can be concluded the comparison of combination 1:2 at concentration 50% has the largest zone of inhibition. The main components of volatile oil of sereh wangi stem are β-myrecene, citronella, citral, and Z-citral, while volatile oil of red ginger rhizome are E-citral, Z-citral, 1.8-cineole, α-pinene, and camphene. Key word: antibacterial, essential oil, Staphylococcus aureus, Cymbopogon nardus L., Zingiber officinale var. Rubrum
