Abstract
Herbal medicine generally more preferable because of its cheap cost and low side effect than chemical medicine. But the use of herbal medicine need to be wary because of yet known clinical side effect that possibility can take effect for pregnant women especially for her gestation foetus. Research on the plant jatropha multifida Linn has been carried out contain alkaloids, flavonoids and saponins. The study aims to determine teratogenic properties of ethanolic stem extract of jarak cina (Jatropha multifida Linn) on the fetal development during organogenesis and a dose which can trigger fetal teratogenesis in mice (Mus muculus). The study used four dose groups with 5 replication in each group. Ethanolic extract of jarak cina plant stem suspended in 0.5% CMC solution and administered orally on days 10 to 14 of pregnancy. The dose given to a group of plant extracts is 400; 600; and 900 mg / KgBW. Mice were caesarean dissected on the 18th day of pregnancy to take the fetus in the uterus. Observations on the fetus include fetal weight and length, the number of resorption and fetal defects, and the number of fetuses with brittle bone disorders. Quantitative data were analyzed by analysis of variance and continued with Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). Qualitative data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the ethanolic stems extract of jarak cina plants (Jatropha multifida Linn) at a dose of 600 mg / KgBW and 900 mg / KgBW causes a decrease in weight and length of the fetus, increasing the number of resorption, abnormal morphology form such as dwarfism, hemorrhage and inhibitted ossification of bone in the foetus.
