Abstract

The rate of occupational accidents and diseases in Indonesia are quite high. Activities in the clinical laboratory possess the risk of occupational accidents and diseases caused by physical, chemical, ergonomic, and psychosocial factors. One of the most common problem of occupational diseases related to ergonomic factor is the layout of the laboratory equipment. Laboratory personels are at risk of getting injured due to inappropriate equipment layout. Based on that reason, occupational health and safety is the most important aspects in the laboratory and the employees have the right to understand them. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between laboratory equipment layout and the health and safety of laboratory personnels. A correlation study was conducted by disseminating questionnaire to the laboratory personnels at Al-Ihsan General Hospital. Questionnaire responses data were analyzed statistically using Pearson correlation test. There was a significant correlation (p = 0.036) between the layout of the laboratory equipment and the occupational health and safety of laboratory spersonnels. As much as 40.1% laboratory personnels health and safety are affected by the layout of laboratory equipment. The regression analysis showed a positive relationship between the layout of laboratory equipment and the health and safety of the personnels. Further studies regarding influencing factors on occupational health and safety should be established to determine the factor that has the most influence on occupational health and safety.
