Abstract

Spatial memory is the working memory used to recall during working on certain task and combination between attention, concentration, and short-term memory. Phyllanthus urinaria L. contains flavonoid compound constituting quercetin. This research aimed to find out the effect of ethyl acetic fraction of Phyllanthus urinaria L. on the increased activity of spatial memory in mice and to find out the hystopathologic representation of hippocampus CA1 Pyramidal cells. This study was conducted to find out the antioxidant activity existing in Phyllanthus urinaria L. extract given to mice with variation dose of 50 mg/kgBW, 100 mg/kgBW, 150 mg/kgBW as well as positive control quercetin dose 42 mg/kgBW and negative control Na-CMC 0.5%. To assess the intelligence memory and spatial memory representation, Morris Water Maze test was used and the result of increased number of hippocampus CA1 Pyramidal cell was analyzed statistically using one-way ANOVA test followed with LSD analysis. The result of Morris Water Maze and the increased number of hippocampus CA1 pyramidal cell showed that there was a significant difference between Na-CMC groups compared with quercetin and all of extract dose variations: 50 mg/kgBW, 100 mg/kgBW, 150 mg/kgBW. Meanwhile the best groups given Phyllanthus urinaria L. extract were the groups with 150 mg/kgBW extract, 100 mg/kgBW, and 50 mg/kgBW, respectively. Considering the result of research, it could be concluded that the Phyllanthus urinaria L. extract at dose 150 mg/kgBW could improve spatial memory in mice.
