Abstract
Depression is a mood disorder characterized by the emergence of negative perspective on the event occurring. Parents of children with cancer disease were vulnerable to depression recalling the effect of cancer disease the children suffered from. Parents with low family support would be more vulnerable to depression. This research aimed to find out the relationship between family support and depression in the parents of children with cancer disease. This research was taken place in Dr. Moewardi Surakarta Local General Hospital and constituted a quantitative research with 2 variables: family support and depression. The instruments used in this research were family support scale and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scale. The sampling technique used was total sampling. The sample analyzed consisted of 50 respondents. Technique of analyzing data used was Product Moment Pearson analysis with SPSS version 17.0. Considering the result of research, the coefficient of correlation (r) was -0.599 with p = 0.000 (p < 0.01) between family support and depression variables. From the result of analysis, it could be concluded that the hypothesis proposed in this study was supported. It meant that there was a very significant relationship between family support and depression in parents of children with cancer disease.
