Abstract

Competition anxiety is the dominant factor in athlete’s motivation building. When an athlete has a high anxiety, the strategy, tactics and technical for motivating him is not effective to encourage his best performance. The coach’s empathy in this case is likely needed more to sweep away the athlete’s anxiety. By such kind of empathy the athlete will get his believe and self confidence as he feels to be supported and trusted by his coach. This research aims to know the relationship between the athlete’s perceptions towards the coach empathy with his anxiety when he is facing competition in THE INDONESIAN KEMPO BROTHERHOOD (PERKEMI) SURAKARTA. The Hypothesis that is offered in this research is negative corelation between the athlete’s perceptions towards the coach’s empathy with the competition anxiety. The subject of this research is 51 PERKEMI Surakarta’s athletes. The measurement which is used in this research is the athletes’ perception scale towards the coach’s empathy, and the scale of competition anxiety. The result of the research shows that the correlation coefficient is (r) = 0.671; p = 0.000 (p<0.01, meaning there is negative corelation which is very significant between the athletes’ perception towards the coach’s empathy with the competition anxiety. The test for the different variable of the athletes’ competition anxiety based on different gender is t = 0.896;p = 0.375 (p > 0.05). Test for the different variable of the athletes’ perception towards the coach’s empathy based on different gender is t = -1.543;p = 0.129 (p > 0.05), while based on different level is t = 2.286;p = 0.027 (p < 0.05). The coach’s empathy gives effective support 45% towards anxiety. This number shows that 55% of the competition anxiety influenced by another variable.
