Abstract
Several clinical epidemiological studies revealed that patients receiving therapy with statins can reduce the risk of death associated with severe bacterial infections. This study aims to separately investigate the effect of simvastatin on the activity of antibiotics ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, trimethoprim and polymyxin against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 in vitro. This study used simvastatin concentration of 15μg/mL, 150μg/mL, and 600μg/mL dissolved in chloroform solvent and combined with the antibiotic ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, trimethoprim, polymyxin each 100μg/mL concentration in the solvent water. Antibacterial activity assays performed with diffusion method and analysis data of the diameter inhibition used ANOVA. The results showed single simvastatin concentration 15μg/mL, 150μg/mL, and 600μg/mL in chloroform solvent not able to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus in vitro. The combination of simvastatin 15μg/mL, 150μg/mL, and 600μg/mL with antibiotic ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, trimethoprim and polymyxin each 100μg/mL not affect the increase in the activity of the antibiotic ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, trimethoprim and polymyxin against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC these 25923 in vitro.
