Abstract

One of the most common infections in the world is caused by Staphylococcus aureus which can be treated using medicinal plants. Red dragon fruit peels (Hylocereus polyrhizus) contains flavoniod compounds, alkaloids and tannins. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of red dragon fruit peels against Staphylococcus aureus. The extraction method used in this study was percolation using 70% ethanol. The extract was then made in 5 concentrations namely 100%, 80%, 60%, 40% and 20%. Antibacterial activity testing uses diffusion and dilution methods. The results showed that the ethanolic extract of red dragon fruit peels had antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus in laboratory culture, but could not inhibit Staphylococcus aureus isolates from patients' pus samples. Ethanolic extract of red dragon fruit peel concentrations of 100%, 80%, 60%, 40% and 20% against Staphylococcus aureus laboratory cultures were 15 mm, 11.67 mm, 0 mm, 0 mm and 0 mm. The Minimal Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) ethanolic extract of red dragon fruit peel against Staphylococcus aureus laboratory culture was 80%, while the Staphylococcus aureus isolates of the patient's pus samples did not have a Minimal Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) value. The results of diffusion and dilution showed that Staphylococcus aureus from the patient's pus sample isolates was more resistant than Staphylococcus aureus from laboratory cultures.
