Abstract

Streptococcus mutans is one of the bacteria that causes the formation of dental caries. The use of herbal toothpaste is better than commercial toothpaste because it contains more antibacterial substances. One of the plants used is cardamom fruit. This study aims to determine cardamom fruit extract can be formulated in the form of toothpaste preparations with a variant of Na.CMC, has good physical quality and has antibacterial power to the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria. Cardamom fruit (Amommum compactum Soland ex. Maton) macerated using 70% ethanol. The results of cardamom fruit extract were formulated in the form of toothpaste preparations with extract concentrations of 1% and variations of Na.CMC. Preparations of cardamom fruit extract toothpaste were carried out antibacterial tests on the growth of mutans Streptococcus bacteria by using paper disc diffusion method. The yield of extract obtained from cardamom fruit was 19.34%. Cardamom fruit extract can be formulated in the form of toothpaste preparations. The results of testing the physical quality of toothpaste preparations the greater Na.CMC used, the greater the viscosity and the smaller the spread of power while the results of testing the antibacterial activity of toothpaste preparations against the Streptococcus mutans bacteria have a inhibitory power. The average inhibition in formula I: 10.67 mm, formula II: 11.33 mm, formula III: 11.33 mm, formula IV: 9.3 mm, extract: 11.33 and toothpaste brand 'pepsodent herbal ': 11 mm and on the basis of the formula does not have antibacterial inhibitory power.
