Abstract

Ceiba leaf (Ceiba pentandra L. Gaertn) contain flavonoid, alkaloid, phenol, saponin, and triterpenoid have activitiy to accelerate hair growth. Leaves leaf extracts are developed in the form of hair tonic preparations so that they are easy to apply and not sticky so they do not leave a crust that can trigger the formation of dandruff. The purpose of this study was to investigated the hair tonic activity of ethanolic extract, n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water fraction from Ceiba leaf on New Zealand rabbits hair growth. Ceiba leaf were extracted by maceration method using 96% ethanol solvent, then fractionation using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water solvents. The results of extraction and fractionation were made hair tonic preparations then tested for physical quality and hair growth activities with 5% extract concentration, 2% nhexane fraction, 2% ethyl acetate fraction, and 2% water fraction. Negative control is used base and as a positive control minoxidil 2% hair tonic is used. Hair growth activity test by applying hair tonic on the back of the rabbit that has been shaved every morning and evening for 28 days, then five strands of rabbit hair were taken randomly on days 7,14,21, and 28 then measured using length shovel and in the last week the hair is shaved and weighed with an analytical balance. Hair length and weight data were analyzed by one way ANOVA method and continued Post Hoc Tukey. The results of the study showed that hair length showed that 5% extract, 2% n-hexane fraction, 2% ethyl acetate fraction, and 2% water fraction have hair tonic activity of accelerating rabbit hair growth which equivalent to minoksidil control 2% seen from length of the hair.
