Abstract

Ibuprofen is one of the Non-Steroid Anti Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) propionic acid derivatives that has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic activities. Ibuprofen is used for the treatment of pain and inflammation in rheumatic diseases and juvenile idiopathic arthitis. Ibuprofen in the gel dosage form is chosen because it is easy to clean with water, gives a cool effect and has good ability to spread on the skin. This study aims to determine the effect of tragedy gelling agent, HPMC and carbopol and the best physical quality in ibuprofen gel. Three formulas for ibuprofen were made with variations in the concentration of gelling agent HPMC, karbopol and tragacanth, each of 2%. Tests carried out for 3 weeks on the physical quality of the gel tested included organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, dispersion, adhesion, and protection. Data were analyzed using the SPSS Statistics version 18.0 program with one way ANOVA method and Independent T-test. Based on the results of this study ibuprofen gel using the HPMC gelling agent, carbopol and tragacanth with a concentration of 2% produced a good gel after storage for 3 weeks. The results obtained that greatly influence the physical quality test are the carbopol gelling agent because it has the highest viscosity, followed by the HPMC and tragacast will produce the lowest viscosity. High viscosity results in longer adhesion so that drug contact is longer. Keywords: ibuprofen gel, HPMC, karbopol and tragacanth, gelling agent.
