Abstract

Oral health plays a very important role in supporting one’s health. Dental caries is the most common dental and oral disease. Dental caries is a disease where damage occurs to the hard tissue of the teeth which is characterized by damage to email or dectin by the activity of Streptococcus mutans. This study aims to determine the effect of varians of carbopol 940 and tween 80 on the physical quality and antibacterial activity of the gel toothpaste preparation of cardamon fruit essential oil. Essential oil was obtained by volatile oil distilation method and the formulated in the form of gel toothpaste dosage variations in the concentration of carbopol 940 and tween 80. Test of antibacterial activity of Streptococcus mutans from the preparation using the disc paper difussion method. The yield of essential oils abtained from cardamon fruit is 2%. Cardamon fruit essential oil can be formulated in the form of gel toothpaste with a variety of carbopol 940 and tween 80 concentrations which caussed an increase in viscosity and a decrease in dispersion. The praparations for cardamon essential oil gel toothpaste FI, FII nsd FIII have antibacterial activity. Antibacterial activity test obtained inhibitory diameters in FI, FII and FIII which were equal to 20,67 mm, 20,33 mm and 21,00 mm.
