Abstract
Sunscreen is a cosmetic ingredient that can physically and chemically inhibit the penetration of sunlight into the skin. Basil leaves (Ocimum americanum L.) are known to contain bioactive compounds that are effication as medicine, one of which is phenolic compounds (flavonoids and tannins) as sunscreen. This study aimed to determine the ethanol extract of basil leaves in the form of gel have good physical quality and stability, SPF value and sunscreen protection activity of basil leaves ethanol extract gel. Ethanol extract of basil leaves was obtained by maceration using 96% ethanol. The ethanol extract of basil leaves was made in 4 formula with variation in extract concentration of 0,24%, 0,48%, and 0,96%. Gel preparation were tested for physical quality, stability, determination of the value of Sun Protecting Factor (SPF) in vitro using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The SPF value is calculated by the Mansyur’s equation. In vivo test using female (New Zealand) rabbit were irradiated with exoterra UV B lamp for 24 hours and 48 hours to see the effects of erythema. The results showed that the value of Sun Protecting Factor (SPF) indicate that formula 3 has the highest SPF value of 22,01, followed by formula 2, 1, respectively 18,05 and 16,04. The erythema test results of all group 6 at 48 hours produced an erythema score of 1 which means that the erythema produced was very small.
