Abstract
Red betel leaf (Piper crocatum Ruiz & Pav.) fraction has very strong sunscreen activity cause its high flavonoid contains. Topical sunscreen can protect the skin from the dangers of ultraviolet radiation. Cream is semi solidpharmaceutical dosage forms that used topically. One of the factors that influence physical quality of cream are ethyl acetate fraction concentration. The purpose of this study is knowing the effect of the differences concentration of red betel leaf ethyl acetate fraction on the physical quality and activities of sunscreen and the stability of cream. Cream was formulated into three formulas with ethyl acetate fraction concentration 0,2 %; 0,4 %; and 0,6 %. Formula 4 (negative control), and formula 5 (positive control). Tests of physical quality include organoleptic, homogeneity, dispersion, adhesion, pH, viscosity, and irritation test on respondents. Sunscreen activity was calculated from absorbance using a UV spectrophotometer in 290320 nmwavelength. The absorbance data used to measure SPF. The results of the data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and paired samples test with 95% confidence level. The results showed that the increase the concentration of the fraction did not significantly affect the viscosity but there was a change of spread and decreased pH of the cream, and did not affect in homogeneity. Irritation test to respondent showed that formula was safe for skin. Sunscreen test showed increasing concentration of ethyl acetate fraction give SPF in formula 1 to formula 3 have activity 8,62; 16,03; and 22,54. The paired samples test viscosity and pH in the correlation coefficient yielded a (sig.) value > 0,05 which showed a stable cream at storage.
