Abstract
Sambung nyawa leaves is one of the leaves that is used as a natural antidiabetic because it contains chemical compounds including flavonoids, tannins, saponins, alkaloids and triterpenoids. The aim of this study was to determine the effect given by sambung nyawa leaves ethanol extract in reducing blood glucose levels and its ability to repair pancreatic β cells in alloxan-induced mice. This study used 30 rats divided into 6 groups, consisting of normal control, negative control, positive control, sambung nyawa leaves extract doses of 75 mg/ kg BW, 150 mg/kg BW weight, and 300 mg/kg BW. All groups were given treatment for 14th days. Blood glucose levels were determined at day 0, day 4th, day 11th and day 18th, on day 19th rats were dissected and their pancreatic organs were taken to make histopathological preparations. Measurement of blood sugar levels in rats use a glucometer (Gluco Dr) and histopathology examination of the pancreatic organs do with Hematoxylin-Eosin staining. The results of the study showed that the ethanol extract of the sambung nyawa leaves could reduce blood glucose levels and increase the diameter of the endocrine cells of rat pancreas. The most effective dose of ethanol extract of sambung nyawa leaves is 300 mg/kg BW. At a dose of 300 mg / kg BW, there was no significant difference with the positive control group, which meant that the extract of sambung nyawa leaves had the equal effect as the positive control group. .
