Abstract

Diuretics are one of the treatments carried out in hypertension, diuretics are drugs that work on the kidneys to increase the excretion of water and sodium chloride, which excrete excess electrolytes in the blood. One of the plants that are widely used in the treatment of diuretics is papaya leaves (Carica papaya L.). Compounds that are suspected as diuretics are alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins and tannins with a mechanism of increasing the excretion of Na + and Cl. This review aims to provide information regarding active compounds, pharmacological activities, and the mechanism of action of papaya leaves as a diuretic. In the review of this article the literature is used. Literature is obtained from national and international journal publications obtained from journal providers on the internet as well as from books and e-books. It is known that papaya has various pharmacological activities in dealing with antihypertensive, antioxidant, antidiarrheal, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antibacterial, anticancer. Active compounds which are generally responsible for pharmacological activities are flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins and tannins. Based on literature review, the part of papaya plant (Carica papaya L) that has the best diuretic activity in this study is the seed portion wih a cumulative urine volume of 18,68±0,31 and diuretic power 1,48 Keywords: Papaya leaf, literature study, parts oh papaya plant
