Abstract

Cigarette smoke contains free radikal which can cause oxidative stress which results in a decrease in the quality of spermatozoa. Compounds such as flavonoids in red spinach leaf extract act as antioxidants which neutralize free radikal as resistance to oxidative stress. This study aims to determine the effect of ethanol extract of red spinach leaves on the concentration, morphology and motility of spermatozoa of wistar rats exposed to sidesteame smoke. Extraction method used in this study was maseration with 96% ethanol. Animal used in this study were that were grouped into 6 groups consisting of the first groups of negative group were given CMC 0,5%, the 2 groups of vitamin E grope dose 12mg/kgBB, the 3 normal group that was not trated, the 4 dose group mg 147mg/KgBB, the 5 dose group 294mg/KgBB and the 6 dose group 588mg/KgBB. All groups except the normal group were given 4 cigarettes a day for 21 days. Data analysis on concentration, morphological and motility data of spermatozoa using SPSS. The result of this study indecate that administration of red spinach leaf extract cann improve morphologi quality (p<0,05), motility (p<0,05), and spermatozoa concentration (p<0,05).
