Abstract
Excessive exposure to ultraviolet light can cause melanin formation reactions, premature aging, sunburn to skin cancer. One of the plants that have the potential to protect the skin from UV rays is the carrot bulb (Daucus carota L.) is a plant that can be useful as a cosmetic ingredient for treating facial beauty and skin. Carrot bulbs have β-carotene which has been proven to protect the skin from sunburn by oral use. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of ethanol extracts of carrot bulbs in protecting the skin from UV rays in variations in the concentration of ethanol extracts of carrot bulbs 5%, 10%, and 20%. The effectiveness of sunscreens was tested in vitro and in vivo using UV-Vis spectrophotometry and erythema scores in male New Zealand strain rabbits. SPF value of stocks is calculated using the Mansur equation. Erythema is performed on the back of a rabbit and incandescent with Exoterra UV-B lamps for 48 hours. Data were analyzed using SPSS with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, One Way Anova test, Post Hoc Turkey except organoleptic, homogeneity, and cream type tests were tested descriptively. The results showed that ethanol extract of carrot bulbs with 5%, 10%, and 20% concentrations had SPF values of 12.31, 25.10, and 37.57, and erythema scores 0 at 24 hours and 1 at 48 hours after exoterra UV B lamps are described. The most effective preparation is the ethanol extract of carrot bulbs with an extract concentration of 20% with an SPF value of 37.57. The preparations obtained were evaluated for physical quality in the form of organoleptic, homogeneity, type of cream, pH, spreadability, adhesion, and viscosity obtained good physical quality cream results.
