Abstract

Strawberry leaf extract is reported to have good sunscreen activity. A good dosage formulation is necessary for the next stage. This study aims to determine the physical quality of the cream preparations and the SPF value of the cream of the ethanol extract of strawberry leaves (Fragaria x ananassa var duchesne) as sunscreens. The extraction method used was reflux with 96% ethanol as a solvent. The extract was tested using phytochemical tests and the extract content analysis was carried out using thin layer chromatography (TLC). The concentration of the extract used to make sunscreen cream is 0.250%; 0.500% and 1,000% of the ethanol extract of strawberry leaves. Evaluations carried out on preparations are physical quality tests, test stability of preparations and sunscreen activity both in vivo and in vitro. Spectrophotometry was used for in vitro testing and in vivo used by some volunteers for irritation testing. The research result the ethanol extract of strawberry leaves obtained a yield of 20,5% and the TLC test showed that the strawberry leaf extract positively contained flavonoids and tannins. Cream of strawberry leaf ethanol extract the best concentration of 1,000% because it had the highest SPF value of 52,90 ± 0,1739. Keyword: Cream; strawberry leaves; sun protection factor; sunscreen
