Abstract

Temulawak rhizome contains curcumin, flavonoid, and tannin compounds. Temulawak rhizome contains antioxidants which are expected to reduce cholesterol levels by increasing enzymes or catalyzing the conversion of cholesterol into bile acids. This study aims to determine whether the extract, fraction of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water of temulawak rhizome have cholesterol lowering activity, and to find out which fraction was the most active in reducing cholesterol levels in white mice fed a high-fat diet. This study used 6 groups of male white mice. Group I (negative control), group II (positive control), group III (temulawak rhizome extract), group IV (n-hexane fraction), group V (ethyl acetate fraction), and group VI (water fraction). Data analysis used the one way ANOVA method (p < 0.05) followed by the Tukey test. The results of this study indicated that all treatments had cholesterol-lowering activity. The most effective fraction was the ethyl acetate fraction of temulawak rhizome at a dose of 5.61 mg/20 g of mice body weight.
