Abstract
Celery (Apium graveolens L.) is a plant that contains flavonoid compounds and their derivatives, namely apiin and apigenin, alkaloids, tannins, and saponins which are efficacious in reducing uric acid levels in the blood. This literature review study aims to determine the activity of celery plants in gout. Literature review research was carried out by selecting topics, collecting data, evaluating data, analyzing and interpreting data from the literature, and synthesizing data. The data sources used in this study are in the form of national and international journals indexed by databases such as Pubmed and Google Scholar which were published from 2008 to 2021 using 17 journals selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results of literature review in related journals prove that celery plants have antihyperuricemic activity. The effective dose of celery extract as antihyperuricemia was found in celery leaf extract with a dose of 50 mg/kgBW rats. The content of active compounds that play a role in antihyperuricemia are flavonoids and their derivatives, namely apiin and apigenin. The mechanism of these compounds in lowering uric acid is by blocking the work of the xanthine oxidase enzyme thereby reducing serum uric acid levels.
