Abstract
Dental caries is a disease that causes problems in the oral cavity, especially in the teeth. Dental caries can be treated with a mouthwash that contains antibacterial substances. Manalagi apple (Pyrus malus var. sylvestris L.) is a plant that contains substances as antibacterial. The bacterium S. mutans ATCC 25175 contributes significantly to tooth decay and the cause of bad breath because it produces sulfur compounds that have a pungent aroma and stick to the oral cavity and the surface of the tongue. The purpose of this research is to produce a mouthwash that has good physical quality and stability, and has antibacterial activity against S. mutans ATCC 25175 which causes dental caries with varying concentrations of glycerin as a humectant. This study used three formulas, namely F1, F2, and F3 with variations in glycerin concentrations of 15%, 20%, and 25%, respectively. The stages of this research include plant determination, manufacture of simplicia powder to become a thick extract using the maceration method, powder moisture testing, identification of extracts, formulation of mouthwash preparations, evaluation of the physical quality of mouthwash preparations, and antibacterial activity tests. Evaluation of mouthwash preparations included organoleptic, pH, viscosity, and stability tests. Testing of antibacterial activity using the disc diffusion method. The results were analyzed using the Paired TTest method and ANOVA using Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) ver26. The results showed that the mouthwash preparations of Manalagi apple extract in all formulas had good organoleptic, viscosity, and stability physical qualities, while in the physical quality test the viscosity had an effect on mouthwash preparations due to the influence of variations in glycerin concentration. Antibacterial activity test against S. mutans ATCC 25175 with variations in glycerin concentrations of 15%, 20%, and 25% had inhibition zone diameters of 20.1 mm, 41.5 mm; and 45.4 mm.
