Abstract

Self-medication is the most first aid used by most people for the purpose of mild treatment without a prescription from a doctor’s interventin. The purpose of this study was to describe the pettern an motivation of the community in the use of cough medicine and to determine the relationship between educational bacground an drug selection. The method used is a descriptive crossectional method. The sampling technique used in this research is purposive sampling. The data used is the data from questionnaire. Petterns and motivations for using coug medicine among the community will be seen using univariate test, while to see the relationship between educational background an drug selection will be seen using the chi-square test. The results showed that the pettern of drug use include the frequency of use, which once a month. Purchase location; pharmacies, distance approximately 1 km. Self medication is carried out by oneself, medicine is OB Herbal with an price of 15.000. The drugs purchased do not cause side effects so they recover gradually. Sources of information obtained are information and education from pharmcies. The motivation for using cough medicine for self-medication is that it is suitable and has a mild illnes, so there is no need to see a doctor.
