Abstract

Lip balm is a preparation that is used on the lips to maintain the health and moisture of the lip skin. Anthocyanin compounds in wungu leaves (Graptophyllum pictum (L.) Griff) can be used as natural dyes and antioxidants for lip balm preparations. Antioxidants in lip balm preparations can prevent blackened lip skin due to free radicals. The purpose of this study was to make a lip balm formulation using natural dyes from wungu leaf extract and to test the antioxidant activity of wungu leaf extract lip balm preparations. This study used three different formulas with concentrations of ethanol extract of wungu leaves of 3%, 10%, and 17% plus one control formula. The preparation of wungu leaf extract lip balm was tested for physical quality including organoleptic test, homogeneity test, melting temperature test, pH test, stability test, and smear power test. The antioxidant test method used is the DPPH method. The results showed that the ethanol extract of wungu leaves had an antioxidant of 63.20 ppm. The antioxidant activity of formulas 0, 1, 2, and 3 were 205.67 ppm, respectively; 50.41 ppm; 48.67 ppm; and 46.53 ppm. The market lip balm has an antioxidant activity of 76.61 ppm lower than that of the wungu leaf extract. The results of the cycling test for physical preparations and antioxidants were declared stable with no significant difference after being tested using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS).
