Abstract

Chewable tablets are oral dosage intended to be chewed, producing a pleasant tasting residue in the oral cavity which is easy to be swallowed and does not leave a bitter taste. The manufacture of chewable tablets, additional ingredients are needed to meet the specified drug requirements. This study aims to determine the effect of mannitollactose fillers on the physical quality and taste response of antacid chewable tablets. This study used 3 formulas with different lactose mannitol concentration. F1 = Lactose : 25%, F2 = Mannitol : 25%, and F3 = Mannitol : Lactose : (12.5% : 12.5%). The granul was made by wet granulation methodand molded with an average weight of 600mg. Evaluation of the physical quality included organoleptic tests, weight variation tests, size uniformity tests, hardness tests, friability tests, and taste respon tests on antacid chewable tablets. The data obtained were compared with the literature and analyzed using the One Way ANOVA test with a 95% confidence level The results showed that variations in mannitol and lactose fillers had an effect on the physical quality and taste respon of the antacid chewable tablets. The high concentration of lactose can improve the variety of weights and sizes, increase hardness, reduce brittleness, and taste response is not acceptable. The high concentration of mannitol can reduce hardness, increase brittleness and provide a good taste response in antacid chewable tablets. The combination of mannitol : lactose (12.5% : 12.5%) is the best formula because it is able to cover the deficiency of mannitol-lactose on physical quality and taste responsiveness in antacid chewable tablets.
