Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is characterized by an abnormal metabolism of glucose from food by the body, causing hyperglycemia. Treatment is carried out by administering synthetic drugs in the form of insulin and Oral Hypoglycemic Drugs (OHO) which if consumed for a long time will cause side effects such as kidney damage and liver damage, so that the use of traditional medicines from natural ingredients is an alternative treatment for diabetes, because it is safer with side effects. Fewer side effects compared to synthetic drugs. Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. Var. Italica) contains flavonoid compounds, which can lower blood sugar levels. The extraction method is maceration using 70% ethanol solvent. The method of measuring blood sugar levels using a glucometer. The test animals used were 30 male Wistar rats which were divided into 6 groups: the control group, the 1% Na CMC group, the 0.45 mg/kg BW glibenclamide group, the 200 mg/kg BW broccoli group, the 400 mg/kg BW group. Broccoli extract BB, group 800 mg/kg broccoli extract BB. The test animals were made hyperglycemia and the blood sugar levels were measured for male white rats of the Wistar strain on the 0th, 4th, 8th, 12th and 14th days. The results of this study indicate that broccoli extract has activity in lowering blood sugar levels. The most effective dose was broccoli extract at a dose of 400 mg/kg BW where there was a decrease in blood sugar levels comparable to that of glibenclamide as a positive control.
