Abstract

From the three varying doses of sarang semut leave ethanol extract on the day-21, it could be found that dose 72 mg/200 g BW lowered total cholesterol and abdominal fat levels more effectively because there was no significant difference of this dose from positive control. Fat excess can result in hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipidemia. Hyperlipidemia is a condition where the level of all plasma lipid fractions, particularly triglyceride and cholesterol, increases. One of plant usable as an agent to lower total cholesterol and abdominal fat levels is sarang semut (Hydnophytum formicarum Jack) plant. This research aimed to find out the effective dose in lowering total cholesterol level and abdominal fat level in the mice given high-fat diet. The mice were allocated randomly into 6 groups, each of which consisted of 5 mice. The measurement of cholesterol level was conducted on the days-0, 14, and -21. To find out the hypercholesterolemia condition, swine fat and quail yolk were administered for 14 days. The doses of sarang semut ethanol extract given to the rat were 18 mg/200 g BW, 36 mg/200 g BW, and 72 mg/200 g BW. The tested preparation was given for 7 days.
