Abstract
Cancer is one of the number two cause of death after cardiovascular diseases in the world. Breast cancer ranks first with a relative frequency of 18.6%. Research on cancer treatment are currently being directed at testing the potential of natural materials as a chemopreventive agent which aims to increase the sensitivity of cancer cells and reduce the side effects caused by chemotherapy agents. One natural ingredient that has been used and tested as a chemopreventive agent is a companion of the family Arecaceae is nut species. This study aims to determine the cytotoxic effect, IC50 and are the most effective of the fraction of n-hexane and water fraction betel nut skin on breast cancer cells T47D. The extraction process was with a nut rind maserasi method using ethanol 96%, followed by fractionation to obtain a fraction of n-hexane and water fraction. Test cytotoxic against cell T47D done with the test method MTT [3- (4,5dimetiltiazol-2-yl) -2-5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide] with a concentration series (500, 250.125, 62.5, 31.2, 15 , 6; 7.8) μg / mL, and read the absorbance at λ ELISA reader at 595 nm. The parameters used are IC50. Results of research and analysis of independent t-test showed that the fraction of n-hexane and water fraction did not differ peel areca significant cytotoxic activity against T47D cells with IC50 value of 377,543 μg/mL and 380.851,935 μg/mL. Keywords: Peel areca nut (Areca catechu L.), T47D cells, cytotoxic.
