Abstract

Essential oil of red ginger (Zingiber officinale Var. Rubrum) and lempuyang wangi (Zingiber aromaticum Val.) was known to have antibacterial efficacy. This study aims to determine the activity of combination essential oil of red ginger (Zingiber officinale Var. Rubrum) and lempuyang wangi (Zingiber aromaticum Val.) as antibacterial to Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Antibacterial activity test conducted by diffusion and dilution methods. The essential oil concentration on diffusion method were 50%, 25% and 12,5% combined comparison red ginger amd lempuyang wangi 1:1; 1:3 and 3:1. Inhibition zone diameter for each combination were 20.10 ± 0.17; 15.43 ± 0.75; 24.30 ± 0.89 mm. On dilution test used concentration series of 50%; 25%; 12.5%; 6.25%; 3.125%; 1.56%; and 0.78% with their comparison 3:1 so got Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of 3,125%. The data were analyzed by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) two-way method. Based on the result, it can be concluded that the combination of essential oil of red ginger (Zingiber officinale Var. Rubrum) and lempuyang wangi (Zingiber aromaticum Val.) have antibacterial activity to Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 with inhibition zone diameter of 24.30 ± 0.89 mm and MBC of 3,125%. The result of ANOVA Two- Way method was significant on each combined comparison. Key words: Antibacterial, Staphylococcus aureus, Essential oil, Zingiber officinale Var. Rubrum, Zingiber aromaticum Val.
