Abstract

Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) and green betel (Piper betle L.) is one of the traditional plants that have antibacterial activity. In a previous study, jatropha and green betel leaf have antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity combination of jatropha and green betel leaf extract against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Jatropha and green betel leaf was extracted separately with percolation method using ethanol 70%. Extract of jatropha and green betel leaf were combined with 3 ratio (1:1), (1:2), and (2:1). Each comparison extracts had been tested by dilution methods which are divided into 12 groups with varying concentrations of 40% (v/v) until 0.019% (v/v), positive controls and negative controls against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 were standarized with Mc Farland 0,5. The results of antibacterial activity has showed that the jatropha leaf extract, green betel leaf extract, and combination of that on 3 ratio (1:1), (1:2), and (2:1) with Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) respectively 40%, 2,5%, 20% , 2.5% and 10%. Comparison (1:2) was the most effective as antibacterial from all combination. That combination has antibacterial were comparable activities with green betel leaf extract evidenced by same MBC while 2,5%.
