Abstract

Teratogenesis is the formation of a congenital defect. This disorder has been known for decades and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in newborns. Porang tuber muelleri Blume species can be used as flour. Porang flour has calcium oxalate which are toxic. The purpose of this study is to find out the teratogenic effects of porang (Amorphophallus muelleri Blume) flour on pregnant mice which were observated macroscopically. Porang tuber powder was macerated with 60% ethanol. Porang tuber flour was tested in each group. Animals were divided into three dose groups and each group consisted of 21 female mice. Dose I is 200 mg/kg BB, dose II is 1000 mg/kg BB, and dose III is 2000 mg/kg BB while control dose only given distilled water, on the 18th day after the administration of porang flour, mice were dissected and their fetuses were taken. Data were analyzed using a statistical test of Mann-whiney test. The results of the porang (Amorphophallus muelleri Blume) flour administration orally at dose 1000 mg/kg BB, dose III is 2000 mg/kg BB during pregnancy can cause toxic effects. Those effects can be observed macroscopically in terms of weight and length of the fetus by dose increasing. The toxic effects on the fetus can be seen from the stunted fetus, bow-legged, and exfoliate skin. Keywords: porang tuber, calcium oxalate, teratogenic, macroscopic
