Abstract

Angsana stem bark is traditionally used as a cure canker sores, diarrhea and ulcer medications. Angsana stem bark contains chemical compounds such as alkaloids, glycosides, triterpenoids, sterols, tannins, phenols, flavonoids and saponins. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of the fraction of n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water from angsana stem bark extract against Streptocccus mutans ATCC 25175. Angsana stem bark powder was extracted by maceration method by ethanol 70%. That obtained extract was fractionated by solvent n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water. The result of fractionation tested antibacterial activity against the bacteria Streptocccus mutans ATCC 25175 used diffusion method with concentration of 50%, 25% and 12.5% to determine the most active fraction. The most-active fraction is continued dilution method to determine the Minimum Kill Concentration with concentration of 50%; 25%; 12.5%; 6.25%; 3.12%; 1.56%; 0.78%; 0.39%; 0.20%; 0.10%. The result shows that the fraction of n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water from the extraction of angsana stem bark has antibacterial activity against Streptocccus mutans ATCC 25175. Concentration of 50% of the fraction of ethyl acetate, water, ethanol extracts and n-hexane has an average diameter of the most effective inhibition, respectively, are 19.2 mm; 11.1 mm; 10.2 mm and 9.5 mm. The most effective fraction against Streptocccus mutans ATCC 25175 is ethyl acetate fraction with Minimum Kill Concentration is 3.12%.
