Abstract

Aging is a process of gradual loss of the ability of tissues to improve or change, and maintain their normal functions to survive against infection and repair deterioration. Process of aging causes the functions of human organs, including kidneys, to decrease. The decline of kidneys functions are indicated by reduced Glomerulus Filtration Rate (GFR) which results in the disturbance of excretion of metabolic products; and hence, the products such as creatinine tend to accumulate in blood. This research aims at investigating the blood creatinine levels of the elderly people. This scientific writing paper is composed based on the results of blood creatinine level examination conducted in the Clinical Laboratory of Setia Budi University of Surakarta towards 25 serum samples of the elderly people in Dharma Bhakti Surakarta Nursing Home and supported with published literature reviews. Samples were tested using Jaffe Kinetic Test and both monoreagent creatinine and standard creatinine, and the creatinine levels were later measured using Stardust FC photometer. The examination on 25 samples of serum creatinine levels in the elderly people demonstrates the following results: the elderly people’s blood creatinine levels in 23 samples (92%) appear to increase, while the blood creatinine levels in 2 samples (8%) do not increase.
