Abstract

More improved mobility can lead to an increase in accident rates which cause infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Today, Catharantus roseus (L.) G. Don. are getting more popular as actibacterial. This study aims at finding out the actibacterial activities of Catharantus roseus (L.) G. Don. leaf extracts against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria, and investigating concentration with the highest inhibition zones. Catharantus roseus (L.) G. Don. leaves were obtained from Ngumpen Village, Karangpandan, Central Java. A total of 200g Catharantus roseus (L.) G. Don. leaf powder was extracted using percolation method with ethanol 70% solution. Percolate were made series of concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 75%. Antibacterial activity tests against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were then carried out using diffusion method. Data on inhibition zone diameters were analized with two-way Anova test. The findings indicate that Catharantus roseus (L.) G. Don. leaf extracts have antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Concentration of 75% have the best antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa with inhibition zone diameters of 20.00 mm and 17.33 mm.
