Abstract

Smoking is a factor contributing to atherosclerosis. Nicotine and carbon monoxide contained in cigarette smoke can increase lipolysis and the concentration of free fatty acid which then influence the profile of fat in the blood, one of which is triglyceride, and hence, active smokers have higher triglyceride levels than passive smokers do. Triglyceride is a type of fat that can be found in the blood and it is the result of food breakdown containing fat and cholesterol that have been consumed and then enter the body, which later are formed in the liver. This study was carried out on 60 research subjects. This was a comparative research with cross-sectional design. The data were processed using computer with Shapiro Wilk test with the significance level of p > 0.05 and independent sample t-test parametrical test with the significance level of p < 0.05. It is found that the average score for active smokers is 93.00±17.51 and the average score for passive smokers is 78.23±17.76 with the significance level of 0.002 (p<0.05). In conclusion, there is a significant difference of triglyceride levels in active and passive smokers. Keywords: Triglyceride level, active smokers and passive smokers.
