Abstract

Kale (Ipomea reptana Poir.) is traditional medicinal plant which was believed society could be used as a sleeping pill. The study purpose was determined the effect of kale leaf extract on the onset and sedation effect duration on male white mice and effective dose of 96% ethanol extract of the kale leaves extract as sedation effects on male white mice. This study was used 25 male white mice, were divided into 5 groups. Positive control group were treated with phenobarbital, negative control group were treated with solution of 1% CMC and 3 groups were given kale leaf extract at a dose of 6 mg/20 gBW, 12 mg/20 gBW and 24 mg/20 gBW. Giving done orally, then observed and recorded the onset time and sedation duration. The results of the average onset time and sedation duration were indicated that 96% ethanol of kale leaf extract can accelerate the onset time and extended the sedation effect duration on male white mice (Mus musculus). The most effective dose of 96% ethanol of kale leaves extract as sedation effects on male white mice is 24 mg/20 gBW. Keywords: leaves of kale (Ipomoea reptana Poir.), 96% ethanol extract, sedation
