Abstract

Cinnamon plants included in the family Lauraceae and are often found in the tropics. According to previous studies of plants cinnamon cinnamaldehyde efficacious as anticancer. This study aimed to determine the cytotoxic effect of ethanol extract of cinnamon bark against WiDr colon cancer cells and its IC50. This experiment was initiated by extracting the bark using 96% ethanol by maceration. Colon cancer WiDr cell lines was treated with ethanol extract of cinnamon bark using serial concentration of 500; 250; 125; 62,5; 31,25; 15,625 μg/mL for 24 hours of incubation. As a control positive doxorubicin was also tested on the colon cancer WiDr cell lines using serial concentration of 500; 250; 125; 62,5; 31,25; 15,625 μg/mL for 24 hours of incubation. Cytotoxic test performed with MTT method and absorbance read on ELISA reader at λ 595 nm. The parameters used are IC50. The results showed of ethanol extract cinnamon bark has low cytotoxic effect against colon cancer cells WiDr with IC50 values of 248,53μg/mL.
