Abstract

Rosella has efficacy as a good antioxidant. To facilitate its use rosella was made lozenges. This study was aimed to know whether the ethanolic extract of rosella flower petals could be made lozenges preparations using PVP as a binder; to know the concentration of PVP that can produce the best physical quality of tablet, and also to find out how antioxidant activity in the extract and lozenges forms, The method used in the manufacture of lozenges is wet granulation. The study was made in 3 formulations with different binder concentration and the same extract concentration. Formula I, II. and III with PVP binder concentration of 2% (w/v, 3% (w/v), and 4% (w/v‟) respectively. The result showed that rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) calyx etanolic extract could be made lozenges preparation. PVP concentration that produced the best physical quality was 2% in formula I. The antioxidant activity which in the etanolic extract of rosella calyx had IC50 value of the etanolic extract (83,00 ± 0,26), formula I (130,86 ± 0,25), formula II (145,75 ± 1,13), formula III (159,58 ± 0,99), showed IC50 value between extract and formula had differences.
