Abstract

Plastic is a material formed from ethylene monomer and additive substances. Plastic is easily degraded into a dangerous substance if it is exposed to heat. The substances produced from that phenomena are acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, benzene, and acetone. Formalin or formaldehyde is a dangerous substance for human’s health. The aim of this research is to determine the content and the amount of formalin in ice plastics with different temperature of immersion. This research was done to 5 kinds of ice plastic samples which are sample A, B, C, D, and E. The samples’ preparation was done with different treatment which is by immersing the samples in the water with different temperatures which are 60ºC, 80ºC, and 100ºC. The samples prepared were then drained and tested qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative test was done by using Schiff reactor which will turn the color into purple if the samples contain any formalin. The analysis method used to determine the amount of formalin is UV-Vis Spectrophotometry. The test was done by looking for the analysis condition first before it is used to determine the amount of formalin in the samples which are operating time and maximum wavelength. The result of the research toward the ice plastic samples of A, B, C, D, and E shows that all five samples contain formalin and the one containing the highest amount of formalin is the B sample with 16.3409 ppm in the temperature of 100ºC.
