Abstract
Malaria is an serious infectious disease because the germs of malaria or fever infection and contagious disease caused by protozoa of the genus plasmodium which is a parasite in red blood cells and damage the erythrocytes. Medicinal plants for antiplasmodial potential to be developed is Mundu (Garcinia dulcis Kurz) therefore it can be used for alternative medicine as antimalaria. The aim of the study was to study in vitro antiplasmodium activity of ethyl acetate fraction of mundu (Garcinia dulcis Kurz) cortex and dichlormethane-methanol sub fraction and to determine the 50% inhibitory concentration values (IC50). Ethyl acetate extracts of mundu (Garcinia dulcis Kurz) cortex separated with kromatografi vacuum liquid method using gradient solvent with n-hexan – dichloromethane –etyilasetat- methanol and the stationary phase was silica gel 60. Monitoring by thin layer chromatography used silica gel GF-254 and a mobile phase of chloroform : ethyl acetate (6:4).A visual method was allowed to evaluate the in vitro antiplasmodial activity of the extracts on P. falciparum chloroquine-resistant strain, FCR-3. The number of parasites per 1000 erythrocytes on thin Giemsa stained smears was calculated microscopically. Percentage inhibition of parasite growth in the presence of extract was determined by compared with that of control without extract that referred to as 100% growth. IC 50 values were determined by probit analysis of SPSS 17 program. The result of the study showed that the average IC50 of fraction V and VII were 13,5 and 651 µg/ml respectively. According to the result of the study the fraction V of Mundu (Garcinia dulcis Kurz.) had a better inhibitory activity than fraction VII against Plasmodium falciparum FCR-3.
