Abstract

Chalcone is a precursor of flavonoid compound, consists two aromatic rings linked by three carbon atoms α,β-unsaturated and has a conjugated double bond with the carbonyl group. To get chalcone compounds in bulk and more variations in structure it is necessary to do organic synthesis in the laboratory. This research aims to obtain chalcone compound 1-(4-aminophenyl)-3-(4methoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one using starting material p-methoxybenzaldehyde and p-aminoasetophenone by Claissen-Schmidt condensation reaction in ethanol solvent using NaOH catalyst. Synthesis of 1-(4-aminophenyl)-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one compound made with starting material p-methoxybenzaldehyde and p-aminoasetophenone in ethanol solvent with 10% NaOH catalyst for 3 hours at room temperature. The purification was conducted by recrystallization used ethanol. Purity test of the compounds synthesized was examined by thin layer chromatography, gas chromatography, and melting point test. Structure elucidation test was done using spectroscopic of ultraviolet, infrared, and mass. The result showed that 1-(4-aminophenyl)-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)prop-2-en1-one compound which synthesized was pale yellow crystal. Purity test showed that the compound was not pure. The compound had chemical structure corresponding theoretically based on elucidation test. From the research it could be concluded that 1-(4-aminophenyl)-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one compound could be synthesized with starting material p-methoxybenzaldehyde and paminoasetophenone in ethanol solvent with NaOH as the catalyst.
