Abstract

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. It is caused by either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is widely used in folk medicine of many countries including Indonesia. This study investigated the antidiabetic activity of combination of basil herbs infuse-glibenclamide and basil herbs infuse-metformin in glucose-induced hyperglycemic mice. The mice were randomly allocated into 10 groups of 5 animals. In group 1, they were given distilled water (control); group 2: glibenclamide 0,013 mg/20 g bw; group 3: metformin 1,3 mg/20 g bw; group 4: basil herbs infuse 0,28 ml/20 g bw; group 5, 6, and 7: combination of basil herbs infuse and glibenclamid with ratios of 0,25:0,75; 0,5:0,5; 0,75:0,25; group 8, 9, and 10: combination of basil herbs infuse and metformin with ratios of 0,25:0,75; 0,5:0,5; 0,75:0,25. The treatments were administered 5 minutes prior to glucose administration. Then, blood glucose levels were observed at 0, 30th, 60th, 120th, and 180th minutes. The results showed that all combinations of basil herbs infuse and glibenclamide had similar antidiabetic activity to glibenclamid. Therefore, the combination of basil herbs infuse and glibenclamide for the management of type 2 diabetes should be highly encouraged with a reduction in the dose of glibenclamide to reduce side-effects.
