Abstract

Calabash (Crescentia cujete, L.) commonly found in tropical area in Indonesia. The pulp of calabash fruit (Crescentia cujete, L.) contains chemicals like alkaloid, saponin, flavonoid, tannin, therefore it can be used as an antifungal. Candida albicans is one of a fungus that causes disease to human. It is an opportunistic fungi that causes illness if the human’s immune system were weakened or the condition when humans were easily sick so the fungi’s reproduction becomes faster. The purpose of this study was to study the activity of antifungal extract of the Calabash pulp (crescentia cujete, L.) on Candida albicans, and to find out the concentrate extract of the Calabash pulp (Crescentia cujete L.) which are the most active as an antifungal against Candida albicans. The type of research is experimental, extraction made by maceration method using ethanol 96%. The method used in the activity test is an diffusion method. The pulp extract of the fruit made in concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%. The dilution of the Calabash pulp extract made with sterile Aquadest and DMSO 3% as an emulgator. Results of this study show that Candida albicans has had antifungal activity with Candida albicans. The extract of the Calabash pulp of concentrations 25% has 9,3 mm a zone inhibition.
