Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 bacterium is gram positive pathogenic bacterium in human beings with varying severity. Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 result in a disease incidence, one sign of which is abscess formation. Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 is most frequently transmitted from hand to hand, so that a hand antiseptic gel is desirable to community. Red galangale (Alpinia purpurata K. Schum.) and bangle (Zingiber cassumunar Roxb.) rhizome putatively has antibacterial activity on Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 as it contains volatile oil and monoterpene compound. The objective of research was to find out the most optimal concentration of gel preparation of combined red galangale (Alpinia purpurata K. Schum.) and bangle (Zingiber cassumunar Roxb.) rhizome volatile oil on the back skin of rabbit infected with Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. The preparation of gel used red galangale (Alpinia purpurata K. Schum.) and bangle (Zingiber cassumunar Roxb.) volatile oil at concentrations of 2%, 4%, and 8%, to be tested for its physical quality and gel stability. Antibacterial test on gel made of combined red galangale (Alpinia purpurata K. Schum.) and bangle (Zingiber cassumunar Roxb.) rhizome volatile oil was conducted in vivo, using the back skin of rabbit infected with Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, and then its healing time is observed. The data obtained was processed using statistic analysis (ANOVA) with two way method, so that the significant result can be obtained from the data. The result of in vivo test at concentration of 8% effectively killed Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 bacterium within 10 days. Considering the result of activity test conducted, it could be found that gel of combined red galangale (Alpinia purpurata K. Schum.) and bangle (Zingiber cassumunar Roxb.) rhizome volatile oil could inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 bacterium. key words: antibacterial, Staphylococcus aureus, Gel, Essential Oil, Alpinia purpurata K.
