Abstract

Kemangi leaves (Ocimum bacillicum L.) have antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis. Chemical compounds contained in basil leaves that have antibacterial activity namely flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins and saponins. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of basil leaf extract gel to cure acne due to Staphylococcus epidermidis, to know the effective concentration in healing acne caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis and to determine the stability of gel preparations. Extraction in this study used the maceration method with 70% ethanol. Preparation of basil leaf extract gel made in concentrations of 2%, 4% and 8%, then tested for physical quality and stability. Observation of healing time is done by observing the duration of acne healing on the back of the rabbit after giving the gel, marked by the loss of pimples and pus. Data obtained were then analyzed by two-way ANOVA. The results showed that basil leaf extract gel had antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis with an effective concentration of 2%. The stability of the basil leaf extract gel has good stability. Keywords: Basil (Ocimum bacillicum L.), Staphylococcus epidermidis, Gel
