Abstract
Bay leaves (Syzygium polyanthum (Wight) Walp.) contain flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and vitamin C. Flavonoids compounds and vitamin C have the antioxidant, because they have the ability to eliminate and effectively reduce damaging oxidizing species. Compounds that have activity as antioxidants are beneficial to be an anti aging. This study aims to determine the effect of increasing the concentration of bay leaves ethanol extract toward antioxidant activity on cream. The ethanol extract of bay leaf was obtained by maceration method using ethanol 70%. Cream of ethanol extract of bay leaf was made in 6 formulas, are F1 (negative control), F2 (positive control), F3, F4, F5, and F6 contained extracts of 1%, 3%, 6%, and 9% respectively. Determination of antioxidant activity was done by DPPH free radical damping method by calculating IC50 value. Cream are also carried out physical quality tests include organoleptic test, cream type, homogenity, pH, dispersion, stickiness, viscosity, and freeze and thaw stability. The results showed that the extract of ethanol bay leaf has antioxidant with IC50 value 24,492 ppm and can be made cream. The results of antioxidant activity test of ethanol extract of bay leaves showed that F6 had the strongest activity then followed by F5, F4, and F3 were 165,318 ppm, 282,447 ppm, 366,767 ppm and 496,954 ppm respectively. Based on the results of the research obtained, it can be concluded that the more concentration of ethanol extract of bay leaves added, the IC50 value of the will be lower.
