Abstract

The major etiology of iron deficiency anemia is blood loss or inadequate iron supply within body circulatory system. This condition could be the effect of secondary cause which resulting from disease progression or condition of excessive use of iron such as gastrointestinal bleeding. Anemia and changes in erythrocyte morphology associated with defect in production, microcytic hypochromic of erythrocyte proved that defect of production resulted in disruption of haemoglobin synthesis. Morphologic erythrocyte examination conducted through peripheral blood smear method which done with Wright and Giemsa staining method conducted in Setia Budi University Laboratory Surakarata. Blood veins sample from iron deficiency anemia patients admitted to RSDU Dr. Moewardi Surakarta, examination done under 100x microscope with addition of an immersion oil. Data analysis done with descriptive analysis. Results of the research of erythrocyte morphology iron deficiency anemia showed that from 30 sample patient, there was 1 sample (3.33%) patient which not suitable to microcytic hypochromic criteria, on the other hand there was 29 sample (96,67%) patients is suitable to microcytic hyprocromyc anemia. Keywords: Iron deficiency anemia, Erythrocye Morphology, Peripheral Blood Smear.
