Abstract

Pneumonia is the fifth leading cause of death in the world. In Indonesia the prevalence of pneumonia is 4,5%. Pneumonia patients generally suffer from complication of other deseases so that given several treatments simultaneously thereby increasing the risk of drug interaction. Drug interaction can be beneficial but can also be life threatening because they can cause death. This study aims to determine the class or type of drug in patients pneumonia, the incidence of drug interaction including the mechanism of interaction and the severity that occurs. The study was a non-experimental study whose results were analyzed descriptively. Retrieval of data is done retrospectively by taking patient's medical record data. Samples were obtained using a purposive sampling method with inclusion criteria for patients aged ≥ 18 years who were diagnosed with pneumonia recorded in the medical record and received antibiotic therapy at the Pandan Arang Boyolali Hospital inpatient installation for at least 3 days . Criteria for exclusion of pneumonia patient’s medical record are not clearly read, the patient’s medical record is incomplete, and the patient is forcibly discharged. The results showed that the potential for drug interactions in therapy occurred in 80% of patients. Of the 92 potential interactions between drugs that occur based on severity, 13% are major interaction categories, 72,8% moderate categories, and 14.1% minor interaction categories. According to the mechanism of pharmacological action 21.7% is a pharmacokinetic interaction, and 78.3% is a pharmacodynamic interaction.
