Abstract

Hydroquinone is a chemical compound in the form of white crystals in the form of needles, odorless, and underwent oxidation to light and air. This compound is used as a whitening ingredient Hydroquinone in cosmetics capable of peeling the outer skin and inhibits the formation of melanin which makes the skin appear black. Hydroquinone and content above 2% are categorized as hazardous to health and are toxic to the body. This study aims to analyze the hydroquinone content in lotions circulating in the pekiringan area of cirebon city by uv-vis spectrophotometry. Samples were taken as many as 4 lotion samples taken from the cosmetic shop in Pekiringan, Cirebon City. This research uses UV-Vis spectrophotometry with fluoroglusin reagent. Based on the qualitative test results of hydroquinone content in 4 samples taken at the cosmetic shop in Pekiringan, Cirebon City with FeCl3 reagent. The results showed a qualitative test of 4 negative lotion samples containing hydroquinone. The identification results show that all 4 lotion samples sold in the comet store Cirebon City Pekiringan region did not contain hydroquinone Dark green hydroquinone standard solution when adding FeCl reagents, Sample A formed a white colored sample Sample B white orange colored sample sample C form a solution Yellowish Sample D formed a yellowish white solution. Lotions that are sold in cosmetics stores in Pekiringan, Cirebon City are safe to use because they do not contain harmful hydroquinone ingredients.
