Abstract

Endophytic bacteria are symbiotic microorganisms that live in plant tissues and do not cause negative effects on their host plants and produce secondary metabolites. The production of secondary metabolites is thought to be due to interactions between host plants and endophytic bacteria. The study of the benefits of endophytic bacteria has expanded into the field of human health, namely with the discovery of many endophytic bacteria that can produce efficacious compounds as medicines. Endophytic bacteria from medicinal plants are known to have antifungal activity. This study aims to determine the antifungal activity of endophytic bacteria Bacillus siamensis and Bacillus subtilis in inhibiting the growth of the fungus Candida albicans ATCC 10231. This research was carried out in several stages, namely identification of test fungi, identification of endophytic bacteria, fermentation of endophytic bacteria for the production of bioactive compounds and antifungal activity tests using the disc diffusion method. Analysis of data using the ANOVA method. Endophytic bacteria used in this study were obtained from previous studies at the Microbiology Laboratory of the University of Setia Budi Surakarta, namely endophytic bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus siamensis. The results showed that taro tuber endophytic bacteria had anti-fungal activity against Candida albicans ATCC 10231 with optimum time of fermented Bacillus siamensis on the 3rd day with 8.53 mm inhibition zone diameter and Bacillus subtilis had optimum fermentation time on the 3rd day with zone diameter inhibition of 11.69 mm, and endophytic Bacillus subtilis bacteria have greater antifungal activity potential than Bacillus siamensis. Keywords: endophytic bacteria; antifungal; fermentation; Candida albicans.
